Creation of the Taiwan Sustainability Value Index (TWSVI)
A better investment performance index than the Taiwan 50 Index and the first index jointly developed by an academic institution and a non-profit organization
On July 19, 2018, College of Business National Taipei University(NTPU) launched the Taiwan Sustainability Value Index (TWSVI), which complies with global corporate sustainability standards and local factors. This index boasts not only high non-profit organization (NPO) reliability and academic professionalism, but also considers risk-adjusted investment performances. As a result, it is able to outperform other indexes such as the Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index, the Taiwan 50 Index, and the FTSE4Good TIP Taiwan ESG Index. Furthermore, the TWSVI is now officially accessible on Bloomberg and Reuters’ real-time financial data platforms. |
The corporate sustainability information provided by NPOs is often more reliable than that provided by companies and government agencies. For this reason, the NTPU College of Business and the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE) leveraged their strengths as an academic institution and an NPO, respectively, to jointly develop and launch the TWSVI. The TWSVI aims to enhance fund allocation in Taiwan’s capital markets and encourage local enterprises to focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concepts and corporate social responsibility (CSR), thereby achieving a win-win situation for enterprises, investors, and society. With assistance from the relevant competent authorities, it is hoped that the TWSVI will help promote the development of Taiwan’s sustainable and responsible investment (SRI) strategies, particularly with respect to exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, credits extended by financial institutions, and asset allocation, and to attract investments from national-level funds, institutional investors, and other investors. |
The TWSVI consists of over 300 screening items covering social, economic, environmental, and disclosure-related (SEED) dimensions, and each item was developed based on global evaluation standards and local factors. The development of the TWSVI also involves the incorporation of findings from local and overseas academic research, thereby strengthening its reliability. The TWSVI was used by the TAISE to screen 209 enterprises that previously competed in the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA), so as to select those with excellent CSR and corporate sustainability performances. After a cross analysis and a comprehensive review, the top 40 performers were designated as index constituents, with their market capitalization accounting for 43.85% of the Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index’s total market capitalization of the weighted index. The constituents of the TWSVI have won many Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards under various categories. This is the highest level of recognition for corporate impartiality and a testament to the high review standards for the TWSVI. Furthermore, the development of the TWSVI is in line with many leading global trends for sustainable management, including those relating to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, socially responsible investment, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), and social return on investment. On this basis, the number of constituents in the TWSVI is expected to increase to 50. |
Globally, sustainable and responsible investments (SRI) are growing at an astounding pace. The developed nations in the West have already been using CSR indexes for some time and numerous index-related financial products have since been created. These include over 200 mutual funds and investment targets such as stocks, bonds, and property assets. As a result, the global SRI market is primarily based in North America and Europe, and there is much potential and room for its development in the Asian region (including Taiwan). |
On May 27, 2016, the NTPU College of Business, known for its academic impartiality, professionalism, independence, and objectivity, launched the first CSR index in Taiwan during the annual meeting of the Taiwan Finance Association. Meanwhile, the TAISE has been awarding the highly-recognized TCSA based on fairness, independence, and impartiality for eleven years. In addition to formulating the TWSVI, the NTPU College of Business and the TAISE will jointly focus on the promotion of corporate sustainability education and academic research. With assistance from the relevant competent authorities, the TWSVI hopes to promote the development of Taiwan’s SRI investment products, including exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, credits extended by financial institutions, and asset allocation, and to attract investments from national-level funds, institutional investors, and other investors. Furthermore, the team has been discussing partnership schemes with experienced global index companies and financial institutions. When the TWSVI is formally established in accordance with relevant regulations in the future, it shall attract investors, facilitate the development of a more socially responsible society, and promote the growth of companies with sustainable values. |
S&P Dow Jones Indices to Calculate Taiwan Sustainability Value Index |
TAIPEI, NOV 28, 2019: S&P Dow Jones Indices (“SPDJI”), the world's leading index provider, announced today that it has been appointed by National Taipei University College of Business (“NTPU”) and Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy as the custom calculation agent for the Taiwan Sustainability Value Index (TWSVI). The index tracks the performance of top companies in corporate sustainability in Taiwan. 【...more】 |
DESCRIPTION |
The Taiwan Sustainability Value Index (TWSVI) is composed through collaboration between the NTPU College of Business and Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy. The Index tracks the price movements in shares of companies which are identified as top companies in corporate sustainability in Taiwan. The Index composition is selected based on screening of corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance, financial performance, and market quality. CSR performance is rated through over 200 questions covering social, economic, environmental, and disclosure (SEED) dimensions. The Index is constructed based on proprietary academic research profiles of sustainability factors. In addition, reputable CSR awards and rankings in Taiwan are taken into account. For each company, a Total Sustainability Score is given through summing up scores linked to CSR questionnaires. The Total Sustainability Score is used to rank the companies within financial and non-financial industries to identify companies eligible for inclusion in the index. The constituents of the index are weighted according to Free Float Market Capitalization, subject to maximum weight of 30% for each constituent. The index composition is being assessed annually based on the current year performance. |

NTPU’s Higher Education Sprout Program is based on two areas: (1) “Connecting the Land and the Sea,” which refers to the strengthening of local developments, and (2) “Soaring over the Asia-Pacific Region,” which refers to the expanding and deepening of our international student/faculty exchanges and academic research collaborations with renowned universities in the Asia-Pacific region, thereby making contributions in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s New Southbound Policy. Under the ACTS Initiative, A represents the “Actions” taken by faculty and students to realize this project; C represents the University’s dedication toward strengthening the “Connection” between local developments-related responsibilities, national-level responsibilities, and international contributions; T and S represent the University’s pursuit of “Truth” and offering of “Services.” Through the ACTS Initiative, we expect to become a world-renowned university that spearheads local developments and sustainable developments while fostering talents who pursue the truth and serve others.
The University’s Higher Education Sprout Project has four primary objectives and its relevant projects serve as effective solutions for improvements: Objective 1 – Implement teaching innovation and enhance the quality of teaching; Objective 2 – Develop the key features of the University; Objective 3 – Enhance the commonality of higher education; Objective 4 – Fulfil our social responsibility.
Academic Capstone Project:
NTPU assists full-time teachers and research fellows to define their own research topics and form research teams to engage in interdisciplinary, intercollegiate, and international integrated research projects. The research topics should be in line with the University’s goal of developing interdisciplinary fields of research and applied prospective studies. The projects stress the innovativeness, prospect, and influence of academic and applied research.
Featured Area Research Project:
These projects must have research topics that are in line with the University’s directions in developing featured areas of research as well as current national policy advancements and key research topics. In addition, we encourage students to conceive feasible solutions to overcome key social issues, delineate revolutionary problems, and assist in the performance upgrade of industries.
Industry-academia collaboration
The College of Business is dedicated toward making connections with industry players as well as implementing industry-academic collaborations, which are achieved by establishing professional practice-oriented courses and developing projects with industry collaborators, thus combining theory and practice. In addition, from time to time, each department would invite collaborating companies that offer internships to talk about their industry and discuss relevant industry trends. By inviting industry professionals to serve as guest lecturers, students can understand more about their internship programs. By scheduling visits to these collaborating companies, students can experience and understand operations management practices and the competence they need for their careers. We encourage our students to participate in internship programs to experience the industry before they graduate.
Industry-academia collaborations in recent years

Joint courses
As a consolidation of theory and practice, the College of Business has planned for the establishment of a financial technology (Fintech) course with Hua Nan Financial Holdings. The company will arrange for industry professionals to serve as lecturers in this practice-oriented course and provide internship opportunities for students to enhance their practical experience. |
Industry-academia collaboration experiential camps
The objective of organizing industry-academic collaboration experiential camps is to allow student interns, enterprises, and teachers to share their experiences with each other. These experiences could contribute toward efforts to improve teaching practices, internships, and industry-academic collaborations in the future, as well as correcting the students’ mindset that an internship is a part-time job. By combining internship programs with teaching and having them play an assistive role, we can create an environment in which students are clear about the things that they should be learning and willing to engage in classroom learning. This is also an opportunity for future student interns to understand the recruitment trends and considerations of enterprises, and thereby acquire accurate insights into the internship programs. |
